Museums & Galleries in Varna
The Varna Aquarium is a public aquarium in Varna and its exhibition focuses on the Black Sea’s flora and fauna – that includes over 140 fish species, but also features freshwater fish, Mediterranean fish, exotic species from faraway areas of the World Ocean, mussels and algae.
The historical-ethnographical complex ProtoBulgarian village Fanagoria is the onе of its kind outdoor acting museum in Bulgaria. Phanagoria was a town dating from 543 years BC, founded by Teian colonists from Asia Minor. The city took its name after one of its founders- Phanagoras and it was supposedly the capital of Volga Bulgaria.
Varna Archaeological Museum is a historical and archaeological museum in Varna. Founded in 1887 by brothers Herman and Karel Shkorpil. The museum is housed in the old building of the Maiden High School in Varna on “Maria Louisa” №41. It was built in 1892-1898, designed by architect Petko Momchilov.
The Museum of the Revival in Varna is situated in an old building which was constructed at the end of the 19th century. In the past, this building has served various purposes, including an independent high school for girls following the Liberation. This exposition highlights important moments of Varna’s history during the Revival period.
In the Museum of the History of Medicine has an exhibition organized in three different rooms.
Museum of Varna History was opened in 1969. The building dating from the middle of the XIX century (1851) which was built for the needs of the Belgian consulate.
The exhibitions present the development of the city from the late XIX and early XX century (1878-1939). There is tracked the development of Varna as a leading port, commercial and industrial, cultural, national and international tourist and spa center.
The Museum of Natural History in Varna was built in 1917 – 1918 by the Ministry of War and the building was used as headquarters of the 15th battalion of the Bulgarian Army until 1955. It is located in the northern part of the Sea Garden.
The City Art Gallery “Boris Georgiev” is the municipal art gallery of Varna. It owns a significant collection of Bulgarian art from the early 20th century onwards, and most notably the largest collection of works by gallery patron Boris Georgiev.
The Puppet Museum was opened in 1985. The Puppet Museum in Varna is the only one of its kind on the Balkans and one of the very few puppet museums in Europe. It is located next to the State Puppet Theatre – Varna.
The Ethnographic museum was opened in 1974 in a restored house from the National Revival period, built around 1860. The museum presents the rich variety in culture and style of life of the population in Varna region from the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
The museum and winery are located in the 112 year old house with an authentic atmosphere. A unique tour of 100 years ago offers the only in Bulgaria permanent exhibition of unique photographs of the city from XIX and XX century. Here you can see:
In memory of the people, who sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom, is build the park-museum „Vladislav Varnenchik”, which is a memorial complex, situated in the center of the battlefield, in the middle of an unique park on an area of 30 decares.
The Naval Museum Varna presents and promotes the naval history of Bulgaria. For 132 years of existence are collected tens of thousands of exhibits. For decades the museum studies our maritime past and the achievements of Bulgarian sailor’s work during the centuries – of the military sailors, of the dedicated to the shipping, shipbuilding, ship repair.
The Art Museum “Georgi Velchev” has been existing since 1991 when it was donated to the city by the relatives of the artist – one of the best masters of sea scapes in Bulgaria. The museum was renovated in 1995 and opened with a collection of 70 works by Georgi Velchev (1891-1955).
